The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) summer immersion marked the end of our first year as an MD-PhD student. It is a 5-day summer immersion program which aimed to orient us about several DOST services, programs, and vision, expose and tour us to several research laboratories, and deepen our understanding about the MD-PhD program, our responsibilities, and opportunities as a DOST scholar.
Day 1 and 2: Department of Science and Technology Compound
National Academy of Science and Technology
Technology Application and Promotion Institute
Day 3: Amherst Laboratories Inc. and Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM)
Day 4: Philippine Genome Center (PGC) and Newborn Screening Reference Center (NSRC)
Day 5: National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH) and International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)
Genetics Service Laboratory (GSL)
Visiting several laboratories, companies, and institutions strengthened our apprehension of how each of them functions for the betterment of the healthcare system and how they communicate to maximize all the resources and cater efficient and competitive services in the Philippines. This immersion emphasized that our role as physician-scientists is not bounded by the four corners of the laboratories nor the hospital, as the knowledge that we have and will be gained under this program is meant to be applied and shared. Because as they say...
"With great opportunity comes great responsibility."
